Frequently Asked Questions
Are you affiliated with St. Luke's Orthodox Church?
The church has very kindly offered to let us use their facility, but Abilene Blues Fusion is not a part of the church. We are incredibly grateful that the church has let us use their facility. Their generosity is part of the reason we're able to offer our lessons for a dollar.
Why do you charge a dollar?
We simply love dancing and want to share that with the community. To help the church pay for the electricity we use, and basic wear and tear, we have to charge a dollar per person. Most of the operational costs of Abilene Blues Fusion are covered by it's leadership.
Do I need a partner?
No, you don't have to bring a partner. For the lessons we'll have our leads rotate. This makes sure everyone gets a chance to learn, and to dance with several different people. Feel free to bring a partner, friend, or anyone else you want to invite though.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably. Your shoes don't have to be dance shoes, but they should have some slip to them and should have soles that won't leave marks. Flip-flops and bare feet are not recommended. You will probably work up a sweat, so gentleman an extra shirt or two could come in handy. If you do want to dress up, there is nothing wrong with that. Stay classy! Just make sure your clothing choices are practical. Closely fitted suits or other clothing that is too restrictive can be a problem. For women, low cut tops and backless dresses/tops can be problematic.
I've never been to a social dance before, are there any rules?
We don't so much have rules, but there are some standards that are pretty common amongst most scenes that we like to hold to. If you are curious about what those are you can read our blog post on Dance Etiquette.
What is your policy concerning alcohol?
We do not provide alcohol, or outwardly encourage our members to bring it, but we do not forbid people from bringing their own as long as they use discretion. Our goal is simply to provide an open, fun, safe environment where people can learn and dance. As such we do not allow drunkenness or underage drinking.
Do you offer private lessons?
Kanit and Rachel do offer private lessons for those that wish to further their dancing. You can contact them to discuss rates and times available.
From time to time Abilene Blues Fusion will officially host workshops. The costs of these will vary depending on the classes, times, and the instructors.
